Unlike purchasing clubs separately, package sets aren’t available to be custom fitted but do come with slightly different options available to ensure that a golfer gets the set best suited to them. Although these aren’t available to be fitted, we provide expert advice both online and in-store in order to identify the set which would be most beneficial to improving a beginners’ game. Deepening on the make and model, some package sets vary between different shaft components, club combinations and sometimes length options. These may not be perfectly made to measure like a fully custom fitted set of clubs but for a beginner, these are an essential short-term investment to noticeably get your golf career moving in the right direction.

Combination

The maximum clubs a player is allowed in their bag at any one given time is 14. Package sets don’t include a full 14 clubs because for a beginner having too many clubs can often be found confusing because they are unsure which club to use where and from what distance. Package sets normally operate with a total of 10 to 12 clubs depending on the make and model. This can also be beneficial as time goes one once a beginner gradually becomes more knowledgeable with the sport and can opt to add additional clubs into their package set at their own accord. Our experts can’t build a certain combination of clubs for a package set but they can recommend between certain makes and models which provide the best package set with the right combination made up for you. Usually, a standard package set includes a driver, fairway woods, hybrid, iron set (5-SW), putter and bag. This combination can change between sets as some provide the option of either a full set or half-set which includes a reduced number of clubs, marked up at a smaller price. Regardless of the combination, all package sets promote maximising forgiveness and distance to ensure every beginner with the maximum possible assistance from their equipment went out on the driving range or golf course.

Shaft

The majority of package sets also come with the option of either a steel or graphite shaft component fitted within the set of irons. Drivers, fairway woods and hybrids all feature a graphite shaft while putters feature a steel shaft. This is different to sets of irons which can include either or, depending on what suits the golfer best. Steel is most commonly used because it is slightly firm and provides golfers with the most control. Graphite is naturally a more expensive component which is why graphite package sets may cost more. This is because these are suited to the more senior golfer who struggles to increase their club swing speed and as a result massively loses distance. Graphite’s naturally lightweight advantage will therefore allow for a player to increase their swing speed and thus assist with improving their distance. Making the choice of choosing the correct shaft component is key even in a package set so that it can allow your swing to develop naturally and not hinder it if you were to have the wrongly suited package set.

Length

While package sets can’t be exactly made to measure to a beginner, depending on the make, model and stock levels, some package sets have provided the option of fixed sets built an inch longer than standard. This would be hugely beneficial for someone who is a lot taller than your average person. Again, with the idea of package sets being a short-term option to get you going, being exactly made to measure isn’t a hugely noticeable factor at this level but if for example a player is taller than 6 foot and 5 inches, then this extended length set would be the most ideal. Overall a beginner wouldn’t notice the huge benefits a fully custom fitted set of golf clubs offers, however it is still recommended to follow our expert advice in order for you to purchase the best package set suited to your new game.
