Custom Fit

American Golfs’ renowned free custom-fitting process provides players with the recommended opportunity of getting their new set of irons made to measure. Our highly popular service can be completed both in-store and online to ensure that your set is perfectly tailored to you. We are all of different statures and sizes compared to one another and so we strongly promote this process in order for you to gain the maximum possible benefit with your sparkly new set.

Lie Angle

First we take your height, wrist to floor measurement and then place you on an impact board to locate the best lie angle suited to yourself. Usually, a player who is much taller would be found to be more beneficial with a club of an upright lie angle and so for a smaller person this would be the opposite with a flatter lie angle being more suited.

Shaft Flex

Following on from this, we would then measure your swing speed to decide which shaft flex best suits your swing. The most suitable flex option is dependent on a golfer’s club head speed; the two should correspond with each other in order to match the club’s ability to bend parallel to the speed of the golfer’s swing. This allows the golfer to feel in complete control of the club head’s path and thus prompting a more confident delivery towards impact.

Shaft Component

Golfers have the choice of either a graphite or steel shaft to be fitted into their irons. The steel shaft is the most common option as these are more durable and the natural added weight that they possess provides the golfer with more control and allows for a firmer ball strike. Graphite is naturally a more expensive component but is also one that is a whole lot lighter than steel. Graphite is therefore extremely beneficial to a player who struggles to increase their club head speed which will hinder their distance. We fully check the best suited shaft component to each player to ensure that they gain the maximum possible benefit.

Length

Shafts can be altered to size and so we would also assess whether your iron shafts should be shortened or extended depending on a player’s height. Normally if a person is between 5 ft 7 inches and 6 foot, their irons should be at the standard length. If they are taller than 6 feet, depending on how much so, each iron should be extended by at least by 0.5 inches. The same applies if a golfer is smaller than 5 foot 7 inches, as they would want their clubs shortening by a minimum of 0.5 inches. Ultimately, we assess the correct length to provide a golfer with the best possible preparation to gain a strong posture, which will help deliver the best possible strike.

Iron Type

Once all these criteria have been met, we would then find the perfect club head for you, choosing from either a forged or a cast head, between a blade style and a cavity backed iron or even somewhere in the middle. The best iron for you will depend on which gives you the most distance, accuracy and consistency. Ultimately the majority of players will be best off with a cavity backed set of irons because these provide the maximum possible distance while also offering extreme forgiveness. Forgiveness is key as it enables a player to basically allow their bad shot to be as good as possible. Blades on the other hand provide the least forgiveness due to their tiny head profile but then provide surreal control. These therefore would be found in the hands of the more elite golfers. Sets of irons also range from either a forged or cast head option. Cast irons are becoming increasingly more popular because they are easier to produce and therefore provide a slightly more cost-effective benefit when purchasing. Cast irons are produced when hot metal is poured into an iron mould. A forged iron head is therefore the opposite and is created via the use of one solid block of metal that is heated and then moulded into the carved shape of the iron head. Forged irons take longer to produce and therefore can be more expensive to buy.

Grips

Once we have completed all of the above, we will then run you through our selection of grip styles and sizes. By measuring your hand size, we will then point you in the best possible direction for selecting a grip which style and size best suits your hand size in order to provide you with the most comfort and control when gripping each club.

Combination

Players can then select how many irons they wish to include to make up their set. Stock sets range from 4-PW, 5-PW, 5-GW and 5-SW. Ultimately our custom-fitting process allows you to completely choose how many irons you wish to purchase. If you’re a player who tends never to use the longer irons then a five piece set consisting of a 6-PW may be ideal for you. At the other end if you prefer to have the full collection, 3-LW consisting of ten irons would provide you with everything you would ever need in the iron department. All in all the choice of how many irons you need is completely up to you. Once all of the above has been decided, our highly popular fitting process is therefore complete.
